🏔️ Berg Lake Day 2: Emperor Falls & The Fail That Almost Ruined Our Trip
June 13, 2026 Distance: 25 km Elevation gain: 1070 m Time on trail: 11 hours Leaving Whitehorn Campground, we quickly meet an unexpected hiking companion—a porcupine walking down the trail ahead of us. Along the way, we visit White Falls, Falls of the Pool, the spectacular Emperor Falls, and hike beside the breathtaking turquoise waters of Berg Lake. After enjoying lunch by the lake and filtering fresh mountain water, we continue toward Toboggan Falls, where cascading water has carved impressive holes and smooth formations into the rock over thousands of years. When we reach the junction to Mumm Basin, we discover the trail is closed due to rockfall. By then, it is already late afternoon, we've already covered many kilometres, and still have a long hike back to camp ahead of us. Rather than tackling another steep 1.5 km climb to the famous Berg Lake Viewpoint, we decide to head toward Hargreaves Lake instead. The forest trail soon gives way to snow-covered sections before opening onto spectacular views overlooking Berg Lake. We skipped the famous viewpoint—and honestly, we don't regret it one bit. The scenery we found was absolutely incredible. While Klara climbs a steep ridge for a closer look at the still-frozen Hargreaves Lake, I happily enjoy a Cliff Bar while soaking in the mountain views below. On our way back to Whitehorn Campground, the adventure isn't over yet. While crossing rocks over a creek, I accidentally drop my camera into the rushing water. I watch helplessly as it tumbles along the creek bed, convinced I've just lost both my camera and all of the footage from our trip. Without hesitation, I throw down my hiking poles and jump straight into the icy creek to rescue it. Thankfully, my camera survives and so does every video from our Berg Lake adventure! After more than 25 km and nearly 11 hours on the trail, we finally make it back to camp exhausted, sore, and incredibly grateful for one of the most rewarding hiking days we've ever experienced. Would you have pushed on to the famous Berg Lake Viewpoint, or made the same decision we did? And what would your reaction have been if your camera ended up in that creek?
