KASOA MOSOKOI [2012] - Warlord Tiare Maori
Kasoa Mosokoi (a necklace of mosokoi flowers) is an original composition by Warlord Tiare Maori, inspired by a full-moon night in 2012 on Tikopia Island, Solomon Islands. Born from patience, deep cultural values, and a rare love finally found, this song was composed beside the sea after an unforgettable evening with the woman who would become my wife. It is a tribute to true love, purity, and devotion—symbolized by the rare and fragrant mosokoi flower. Kasoa Mosokoi—a necklace of mosokoi flowers—is an original composition by Warlord Tiare Maori, born from patience, devotion, culture, and an unforgettable night in 2012. Earlier that evening, just after darkness fell, I was in the nearby village of Nuku, with the love of my life—the woman who is now my wife. We shared an intimate and unforgettable early night together, a moment of closeness that confirmed what my heart already knew. At around 10 p.m., I returned to my home village of Namo, carrying those emotions deep within me. The moon was already full and high in the sky, shining with extraordinary brightness. A strong breeze blew in from the sea, carrying the breath of the South Pacific across the shore. Drawn by the stillness of the night, I walked to a remote part of the beach and lay upon a vast, almost perfectly flat rock that stretches across much of the shoreline. This place is known as Fatu-Rafarafa-i-Fongo-Taurau—the flat stone at Fongo Taurau. There, beneath the moon, surrounded by wind and ocean, the love I carried from Nuku began to take shape. I searched for words deep enough to hold what I felt. Slowly, those words formed a melody. The melody became poetry. And the poetry became a song—one filled with promises of enduring love. From that sacred moment, Kasoa Mosokoi was born. The meaning of the title is deeply rooted in culture. The mosokoi is a rare and remarkable tree that grows tall with a single strong trunk. When it flowers, clusters of beautiful green-yellow blossoms emerge directly from the bark of its branches, releasing a powerful and unforgettable fragrance—sweet, rich, and unique. On my home island, people adorn themselves with mosokoi flowers during dances, ceremonies, and even in everyday life, drawn to both their beauty and their lasting scent. A kasoa, or necklace, is traditionally made by carefully stripping the bark from a branch of the mosokoi tree and attaching the bunches of flowers to it. It becomes a living adornment—precious, meaningful, and worn with pride. In our culture, a flower is often used to describe a loved one. I chose the mosokoi flower to describe my love because of what it represents. The mosokoi tree is rare, and its flowers are difficult to obtain. As the tree grows taller, the flowering branches often die and fall away, making the blossoms harder to reach. One must wait, search, and sometimes climb high to find them. My own journey to love mirrors this truth. I grew up moving from primary school to secondary school and then to university, yet never found my true love. As the firstborn of my family, I was raised with deep principles—to abstain, to remain pure, and to wait. Many people crossed my path, but none captured my heart completely. None reached beyond affection into something deeper. Then, the day I met her, everything changed. I felt it immediately, deep within me. For the first time in my life, I knew without doubt that this was true love—the love I had been waiting for all my life. In our culture, a woman’s purity is held in the highest regard. A young woman who has kept herself is often compared to a fresh flower whose petals have not yet opened—untouched, unworn, and never claimed. It is believed that a flower opens only for its first true love. When a woman gives herself to that first love and becomes his wife, she is seen as a flower at its most precious moment of blossoming. I was the first love of my wife, just as she was mine in the deepest sense. She chose me fully, and I chose her fully. That bond is sacred. A man who is the first and only love of his wife carries that honor for life—not in pride alone, but in responsibility, humility, and respect. It is the highest honor a man can hold. This is why Kasoa Mosokoi carries such weight. She is my rare flower—protected, precious, and given in fullness. This song is my necklace of mosokoi flowers, woven from patience, culture, devotion, and a love that revealed itself beneath a full moon by the sea. Rooted in Namo Village, Tikopia Island, Temotu Province, Solomon Islands 🇸🇧, Kasoa Mosokoi carries the spirit of the land, the ocean, and a love meant to endure beyond time. The pictures in the video were captured by myself in 2014. The pictures were taken from the highest point in Tikopia Island, called Te Uru Fenua. The lake is of fresh water. The first smaller rock on the other side of the lake from the mountain on the right is called Nuku, which is mentioned in the chorus of the song. However, Nuku also means place.
