Safe Space Episode 62: Cheap Safe vs. TL-30 Rated Safe | What We Learned From Cutting Them Open

What happens when you cut into a cheap big box gun safe compared to a real TL-rated safe? In this episode of Safe Space, we sit down with Northwest Safe master safe technician Jeff Snow to break down our recent safe cutting test, where we attacked an entry-level 16-gauge safe and compared it to a TL-30 rated safe. The difference was dramatic. The 16-gauge safe was opened in minutes with an angle grinder. The TL-30 safe was a completely different story. Between the outer steel, concrete composite barrier, internal reinforcement, deflector plates, and the amount of material that had to be cleared out, the TL-30 safe showed why real burglary-rated safes are in a different category. We also explain what many people misunderstand about UL TL ratings. A TL-15 or TL-30 rating does not mean “only 15 or 30 minutes of protection” in a real-world burglary. UL testing measures net working time, not total clock time. Tool changes, repositioning, fatigue, noise, dust, heat, confined spaces, and real-world placement can all make a major difference.
