The film stars Sanjay Kapoor as Karan Verma (actually Gayatri Devi's son, brought up by Sharada Varma), Juhi Chawla as Kajal Sahay (Karan's love interest and Ramakant Sahay's daughter), Moushumi Chatterjee as Sharada Varma, Karan's foster mother, Aruna Irani as Gayatri Devi Singh, Karan's real mother, Amrish Puri as Thakur Ugranarayan Singh (Gayatri's evil step-brother), Om Puri as Ghulam Rasul, Saeed Jaffrey as Ramakant Sahay (Kajal's father), Gulshan Grover as Inspector Tribhuvan Pramod, Alok Nath as Dr. Neelkanth, Jagdeep as P.K. Dhoot (Kajal's maternal uncle, thus brother-in-law of Ramakant), Deven Bhojani as Karan's college friend. The story revolves around Karan (Sanjay Kapoor), who is about to marry his true love, Kajal (Juhi Chawla). On the day of their engagement, Karan discovers that his mother is not his biological mother. His real mother, Gayatri Singh (Aruna Irani), lives in Sundernagar. Karan sets out to find her and uncovers the tragic story of her life. Her stepbrother had killed her husband and confined her in a mental asylum to inherit all the wealth. Karan must now take revenge on those responsible for his mother's suffering.
