As flower growers, we constantly search for ways to increase plant growth, such as adding sugar to water. While some believe that sugar helps with nutrient uptake, this is unfortunately not the case. Adding sugar water to plants does more harm than good. Reduces Water Absorption Sugar water is more difficult to absorb in the soil, and it doesn't absorb the nutrients it should. This means that the presence of excess electrolytes restricts water movement and reduces water movement around the roots, preventing the plant from utilizing the water. Nutrient Absorption Sugar water may seem like a potential nutrient for plants, but plants don't absorb carbohydrates through their roots. Plants only use carbohydrates to facilitate photosynthesis. Sugar water can't help with nutrient absorption. Diseases Using sugar water can, over time, lead to the growth of diseases such as powdery mildew in the soil. This is not good for plants. Nitrate Levels Studies have shown that using sugar water reduces weeds by lowering nitrate levels in the plants' bodies.
