That's what we're going to talk about today. What is pyelonephritis? What is the difference between pyelonephritis and cystitis? Is pyelonephritis a form of urinary tract infection? What are the dangers of pyelonephritis and also very importantly: what are the warning signs and symptoms of this disease? Folks, here's the thing: this is a very important topic. You need to know this well: pyelonephritis is a kidney infection; an infection of the kidneys. It is a type of urinary tract infection that affects at least one or both kidneys. People sometimes confuse this, and whenever we talk about urinary tract infections, they think of cystitis. There's a video on this channel where I talk specifically about cystitis – but that's a different topic. Urinary tract infection is a broad term – it means there's an infection in any part of the urinary tract. If the infection is in the bladder, it's cystitis. If it only affects the urethra, the final part where urine comes out, it's urethritis. Now, when an infection caused by bacteria affects one or both kidneys, then we have a case of pyelonephritis. And explaining it this way, you should already understand that when this happens, it's a situation that requires greater care; more attention to treatment because it's a type of infection attacking a vital organ in our body. A person with pyelonephritis always needs to be treated with great care and attention – and hospitalization is often necessary. And in general, pyelonephritis ends up being a complication of cystitis – a complication of a lower urinary tract infection. The bacteria from cystitis, if not properly treated, literally ascends to the kidneys. That's why the main symptoms are; pay close attention now because I'm going to talk about the symptoms: fever, back pain in the kidney area; there may be nausea and vomiting, a feeling of malaise with a general decline in the person's condition. And the urinary symptoms: pain when urinating, that burning sensation, a burning feeling in the urine; more frequent urge to go to the bathroom; and often another common sign that appears is blood in the urine – we call this hematuria – the urine can even take on a Coca-Cola color. And it's a serious problem, okay folks; I'm reinforcing this here so that people know when to seek medical attention if they are experiencing symptoms like the ones I just mentioned. It's serious because if left untreated, it can develop complications from the infection – an untreated case of pyelonephritis can even lead to sepsis, a generalized infection – yes, as I've already said, we're talking about a vital organ. In other situations, even kidney damage leading to loss of function can occur. There are situations where a case of pyelonephritis can require hemodialysis.
