Ben van Dijk - bass trombone “Cafe 1930”
Pour yourself a glass of good Malbec, sit back, and enjoy. Café 1930 is the second movement from Astor Piazzolla's iconic Histoire du Tango, a work that traces the evolution of the tango. It signifies a pivotal era in the history of the Argentine tango: the moment when people largely stopped dancing to the music and instead began to listen to it in cafés. This shift allowed the tango to evolve into a more musical, romantic, and melancholy form, featuring slower, more complex harmonies. Piazzolla's fusion of the traditional tango with elements of classical music and jazz is what created the Nuevo Tango (New Tango), fundamentally changing and democratizing Argentine music. Astor Piazzolla's "Café 1930" is a deeply evocative and beautiful piece. The music is infused with a deep, contemplative melancholy. It is a slow, sultry melody, full of 'tristezza'—sadness. This is the sound of listening; of reflection. But the heart of the tango never fully rests. Suddenly, the quiet contemplation gives way to a surge of inner fire. It's a moment of virtuosity; a flash of traditional Argentine spirit before the music settles back into its thoughtful melancholy. A perfect, vivid burst of emotion. Then, as quickly as it arrived, the intensity subsides, melting back into the soft, reflective atmosphere of the 1930s café. This video features a special version of Café 1930, showcasing myself on bass trombone, accompanied by Norberto Vogel, who also created this unique arrangement. #basstrombone #Pensionista #piazzolla #Cafe1930 #nuevotango Ben's Practice Mute Backing Tracksmusic Internationale Posaunenvereinigung
