Sven Hannawald was a sports superstar in Germany. As a ski jumper, he made sports history. He was the first participant ever to win all four jumps in the Four Hills Tournament in a single year. Two years later, he was at rock bottom. On January 6, 2002, Sven Hannawald ascended to the ranks of the greatest German athletes. He won all four jumps in the 50th Four Hills Tournament. No one had ever achieved that before. Germany was at Hannawald's feet. He became world champion and Olympic champion, celebrating numerous World Cup victories. A ticking time bomb was developing inside him. In February 2004, he ended the season early, no longer traveling from World Cup venue to World Cup venue, but from doctor to doctor. While on vacation, he suffered a total breakdown, followed by a diagnosis from a psychosomatic doctor: burnout. Sven Hannawald disappeared from public life – and even after his stay in the hospital, it took several years to regain his personal balance.
