How a Chick Hatches (What Really Happens Inside the Egg!)

What a chick has to go through before it can hatch out of its egg into the world is nothing short of amazing! It has to get into the correct position, with its head near the air cell and put its head under its right wing pointed at the air cell. When it gets too big for the blood vessels around the shell membrane to meet its needs for oxygen, the chick breaks into the air cell and its lungs start to work. Once that air is used up, it uses its egg tooth to tap against the inside of the shell until it breaks a hole in the shell and can breathe the outside air. Slowly the external blood vessels dry up and the yolk is drawn inside the chick's abdomen. It takes thousands of taps until the chick can break a zig-zag slit anticlockwise around the egg shell, and finally it pushes against the crack until it heaves itself out of the egg!
