Shakotan Town, known for its beautiful sea called "Shakotan Blue" and its sea urchins which are in season during the summer, attracts many tourists. The climax of the Bikuni Shrine Grand Festival is the fire-walking ceremony, in which a bright red tengu (mythical creature) called Sarutahiko and a portable shrine bravely cross through blazing flames. This festival, which is said to have continued for over 100 years, begins with a procession on the sea by fishing boats flying large fishing flags, and a Shinto ritual in which the portable shrine enters the sea, before proceeding to the shrine where flames await, cutting through the darkness.
