Strengthening Existing Local Systems to End Child Marriage in Bangladesh

In the northern districts of Kurigram and Chapainawabganj, existing local government systems are being strengthened to protect children from early marriage. Through the Strengthening Social and Behaviour Change (SSBC) project, supported by UNICEF and implemented by World Vision Bangladesh, key bodies like Union Child Protection Committees, Upazila Child Welfare Boards, and Police Station Child Help Desk members are being mobilized and trained. This capacity building enables them to hold regular meetings, effectively handle cases of child violence, act promptly, and report findings with evidence to higher authorities. As a result, local authorities have become vital partners in prevention. Across four upazilas, Child Protection Standing Committees are active, early signs show child marriage rates declining, and communities are taking action to protect their children.
