I want to tell you something that still embarrasses me when I think about it, and I've been gardening for close to thirty years. For the first fifteen of those years, I had an asparagus bed. Decent sized one, too — about twenty feet long, four feet wide. And every spring I'd go out there in the heat, on my hands and knees, with the mosquitoes doing what mosquitoes do, and I'd harvest asparagus for maybe two weeks. Two weeks, if I was lucky. The spears would come up, I'd cut them, and then the whole bed would just sort of... fizzle. Thin little pencil spears toward the end of the season. Ferns everywhere. The bed looking like it was giving up on me personally. I'd maybe pull eight, ten pounds out of the whole thing across a season. I told myself that was just how asparagus worked.
