It's raining, but the pedals are turning! In this episode, we say goodbye to the wooden sculptures of Dartmoor and leave the bustling Princes Highway for quiet forest roads towards Hamilton. The day's route: Dartmoor - Digby - Branxholme. The day began with Australian paradoxes. First, you find a free rural toilet with a shower, then you buy water at the local store for a whopping $17, and then a kilometer later... you stumble upon a free drinking spring! We head out onto forest roads. The rain reveals the delightful aroma of eucalyptus trees. We find giant cones from local pine trees and mushrooms suspiciously similar to our boletus mushrooms (the "if you don't know, don't eat" rule works flawlessly). In the village of Digby, I stop at the Roadhouse hoping for a hot lunch, but it turns out to be a gritty farmhouse pub for an evening pint of spirits. There's no food, no coffee machine, but the kind host offers the wet cyclist a mug of instant coffee. And outside, a technological marvel is discovered: a working payphone! Calls within Australia are free, you can send text messages, and, hey, it's Wi-Fi enabled! The road from Digby to Branxholme is flat, straight, and so deserted that the perfect asphalt is overgrown with lichen. Over the 30 km, I pass only one other tractor. In Branxholme, I find a free campsite: power outlets, Wi-Fi, a gas barbecue. I pitch my tent right in the gazebo to escape the rain, drink a $7 coffee from the snack bar across the street, and get ready for bed. But as soon as it got dark, someone nearby started snoring loudly and stomping. I grab a flashlight and go looking for the nighttime visitor...
