That year, China had just entered its fifth year of reform and opening up; televisions were still rare, and mobile phones and the internet had not yet been invented… This video is based on a precious documentary filmed over six months on 16mm film by directors Karma Hinton and Richard Gordon in Zhangzhuang Village, a suburb of Changzhi City, Shanxi Province. Edge Documentary has performed AI frame interpolation, professional noise reduction, and secondary detail enhancement and restoration on the original footage, bringing those dormant images from over 40 years ago back to life! Faded cotton-padded coats, broken firecrackers scattered on the ground, and the piercing sound of suona horns will instantly transport you back to that era of material poverty but spiritual richness. "The lights will eventually go out, the firecrackers will eventually fade, but those memories of the Spring Festival, transcending the long years, still warm the hearts of those who come after."
