Did Tom Sloane RUIN Daria?!

MTV’s Daria underwent a bit of a shift in its last couple of seasons. It started as a show about a brilliant but antisocial teenage girl navigating high school life in a world that seemed to favor the vapid and shallow. In its later years, it definitely WAS still that – but with a greater focus on Daria Morgendorffer’s love life. At the center of this shift was Tom Sloane, whom Daria dated in the fifth and final season. I won’t say Tom is the most HATED Daria character, but he’s probably the most controversial. Everyone has an opinion on Tom – so much so that all these years later, fans are still debating whether or not he “ruined” the show. But the Tom era was actually kind of necessary to give Daria a more complete character arc. Because, ultimately, this part of the story isn’t really ABOUT Tom. It’s about Daria going through something everyone does… or at least, something everyone SHOULD go through: adjusting her worldview based on new experiences – in this case, her first real relationship. It certainly wasn’t as simple as she would’ve liked – but hey, life rarely is.
