The Other Bennet Sister Review | Mary Gets Her Moment Finally (No Spoilers)

The Other Bennet Sister finally gives Mary Bennet the story she was never allowed to have in Pride and Prejudice. No spoilers in this review. In this video, I’m talking about The Other Bennet Sister as a full series: what works, why Mary is such a compelling lead, and whether this Jane Austen follow-up is worth watching for fans of Pride and Prejudice, period dramas, and character-driven British TV. The show moves quickly past the familiar Pride and Prejudice storyline and into Mary’s world. In Jane Austen’s time, when “a good match” to a man could determine whether a woman survived or thrived, Mary Bennet is a fascinating character to center. She is educated, bookish, observant, socially different, and not easily placed into the usual expectations for women around her. Ella Bruccoleri is essentially flawless as Mary. She brings such intelligence, awkwardness, sensitivity, humor, and humanity to the role. The show shines a beautiful light on many qualities that can feel neurodivergent-coded: introversion, empathy, high sensitivity, intensity, and the experience of being overlooked until someone finally sees you clearly. It is also much funnier than I expected. I laughed out loud repeatedly at so many relatable scenes and great jokes. The episodes are short, the pacing is zippy, and the show gives you a lot very quickly without losing its warmth. The cast is excellent across the board. Ruth Jones and Richard E. Grant are wonderful as Mrs Bennet and Mr Bennet, Indira Varma and Richard Coyle bring real warmth and charm, Tanya Reynolds is fantastic, and the younger cast - including Donal Finn, Poppy Gilbert, and Laurie Davidson - fill every moment asked of them. If you love Jane Austen adaptations, especially Pride and Prejudice, this is absolutely worth your time. Fans of the Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice, the Keira Knightley version, and even Bridgerton may find a lot to enjoy here - though this is more subdued, character-focused, and gently comic than Bridgerton. For me, The Other Bennet Sister works because it takes the forgotten sister and gives her room to become a full person. Mary Bennet moves from the background to center stage, and the result is beautiful, funny, thoughtful, and deeply satisfying.
