Grand Canyon Railway Steam Trains

Since 1989, the famed Grand Canyon Railway has been offering a nostalgic, relaxing way to travel to one of the America's best known natural landmarks. Many trips operate with F40 power, but there are still some excursions offered behind the railway's two historic steam engines - the 29 and 4960. The 29 is a 1906-built Alco 2-8-0 Consolidation, originally built for Michigan's Lake Superior & Ishpeming and spent its life hauling loads of iron ore. The 4960 is a 1923-built Baldwin, built for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy in freight service. It was later used on the railroad's public relations program in the late 1950's to early 1960's, becoming a fantrip favorite. Both engines have operated for the Grand Canyon Railway since the 1990s. In this compilation, both former freight locomotives put on a fantastic show as they pull trainloads of tourists to and from the South Rim of the Canyon. Having been heavily modified and converted to burn waste vegetable oil in an incentive to reduce environmental impact, both are now some of the "greenest" steam engines in service today! The Grand Canyon Railway runs steam on select special events and on the first Saturday of the month from March - September.
