Be The People | Lindy Waters III: Sacred Like Me

Meet Lindy Waters III, Spurs forward and one of five Native Americans in NBA history. San Antonio has the 10th largest Indigenous population in the country. For over a decade the Spurs have been building something in that community rooted in real relationships. It started with Patty Mills and a moment before Game 1 of the 2014 Finals, when then-Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich asked him if he knew it was Eddie Mabo Day. Mills became emotional. The team played the best basketball Spurs CEO RC Buford had ever seen. Lindy Waters III is the next chapter. He went undrafted, made the league as a proud citizen of the Kiowa Nation, and now runs cultural camps and college scholarships through his foundation for kids in San Antonio who grew up without anyone in those shoes to look up to. "Pound the Rock" is inscribed in Kiowa at the tunnel exit. For Waters, basketball is the platform. His community is the point.
