#Container ship #Shipwreck #Crash Top 7 Worst Container Ship Accidents in History In seventh place is Hanjin Pennsylvania The container ship Hangin Pennsylvania was launched in March 2022. Less than a year later, the ship left the shipyard when, on 11 November 2002, off the coast of Sri Lanka, on a voyage from Singapore to Germany, an explosion occurred in the cargo hold in the cargo hold. Four days after the first explosion, the 282-meter ship was rocked by a second explosion. Its source is one or more containers of fireworks that were listed incorrectly on the ship's manifest. Sixth place Hyundai Fortune - Gulf of Aden, 2006 The Hyundai Fortune suffered a massive explosion as it headed west in the Gulf of Aden on March 21, 2006. The blast threw dozens of containers overboard and created a debris field that was estimated to be five miles around the ship. The resulting fire burned for several days. All 27 crew members evacuated and were taken in by a Royal Netherlands Navy destroyer, with only 1 suffering non-life-threatening injuries. In 5th place MSC Napoli - English Channel, 2007 In January 2007, the Napoli cracked and sank due to bad weather in the English Channel on a voyage from Belgium to Portugal. All 26 crew members successfully abandoned it, leaving Napoli adrift on the coast of England. She was eventually taken under tow, but officials feared she might break up and sink, so she was deliberately beached in Lyme Bay off the coast of Branscombe. In fourth place Rena - New Zealand 2011 In the early hours of 5 October 2011, the container ship Rena collided with the Astrolabe Reef in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty at about 17 knots while heading towards Tauranga. Due to strong surf in January 2012, the Rena was divided into two parts, and the rescuers had only one option left - to dismantle the sunken ship right on the reef. In the end, the resulting release of some 200 tons of fuel oil and a significant reduction in the number of cargo containers on the ship prompted the Prime Minister of New Zealand to loudly declare this wreck "the worst maritime disaster" in the history of the country. Although most of the wreckage was removed during the search and rescue operation, parts of the ship are found on the reef to this day. In third place is MSC Flaminia - North Atlantic, 2013. The German-flagged container ship Flaminia was hit by a series of explosions and a major fire in its cargo hold while on a North Atlantic voyage in July 2012. Four people died as a result of the explosion and fire. The rest of the crew left the ship and were picked up by the Good Samaritan. The container ship burned for several weeks, releasing toxic smoke into the air and causing serious damage to the ship. Because of the danger to the environment, the container ship was denied asylum for several months before, almost three months after the first explosion, Germany finally agreed to take it to Wilhelmshaven. All crew members on board safely left the vessel, and both halves of the vessel remained afloat under the supervision of rescuers. The stern section sank spectacularly after about 10 days. Rescuers were able to attach a towline to the bow, but it too sank a few weeks later. An estimated 4,293 containers were lost as a result of the accident. The front of the ship burned in the Indian Ocean for about a month. An investigation into the sinking of MOL Comfort found that the vessel suffered a hull beam fracture, but investigators were unable to determine the exact cause of the initial fracture. However, the incident led to the adoption of new regulations regarding the strength of the hull beam of large container ships. First place Maersk Honam - Arabian Sea, 2018 Maersk Honam is the largest ship on our list of modern container shipping disasters. In fact, this is the only ship called an extra large container ship, which is one of the largest ships currently on the water. It is also one of the youngest ships on our list, most recently delivered by South Korean company Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2017. The ship, loaded with a total of 7,860 containers, reported a serious fire in one of its cargo holds on March 6, 2018, while heading west in the Arabian Sea about 900 nautical miles southeast of Oman. Of the 27 crew members on board, 23 were evacuated to the nearest container ship. Unfortunately, five crew members died as a result of the accident. A week after the start of the fire, it covered the entire cargo area from the bow to the superstructure. Nice to meet you here! Subscribe to the channel!
