And a huge, dark green bush that seems to be growing but yields nothing. Zucchini seems like a plant for the lazy. Toss in a seed, water it, wait for the giant. And that's the catch. The zucchini only pretends to be easy, but beneath that broad cap of leaves, a silent game is being played to see whether you'll even see fruit. It's decided in summer, not spring, when you planted it. Finally, the trick that matters most. Why does one oversized fruit, left on the bush out of pride, hold back the entire harvest until the end of the season? The zucchini works for itself, not for you. When a large fruit ripens with ready seeds, the plant gets the signal: done. And it stops setting new ones. To keep the bush fruiting like crazy until the first cold weather, you have to constantly trick it. You cut off the young fruit after fifteen or twenty centimeters—the plant thinks it's lost its offspring and starts producing new flowers with double the force. It's a conveyor belt.
