Putin loses his temper As the G7 summit concludes this Wednesday in Évian-les-Bains, international tensions continue to escalate, from the Middle East to the waters of the English Channel. The US president has threatened to resume bombings against Iran if it "doesn't behave." This statement comes the day after new Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, to which the Iranian army has promised a "severe" response. At the same time, the G7 leaders have expressed their determination to increase pressure on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. The United Kingdom and Donald Trump have notably advocated for stricter sanctions against Russia. Following a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, the US president announced the reinstatement of certain sanctions targeting Russian oil, which had been temporarily suspended due to rising crude prices linked to the conflict with Iran. London also unveiled new measures. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the supply of enriched uranium to Ukraine to fuel its nuclear power plants, as well as a new round of sanctions targeting several Russian financial institutions, dozens of ships accused of exporting Russian oil and gas, and a clandestine military supply network. These announcements were met with silence from Moscow, but they coincide with rising tensions in the English Channel. According to several British media outlets, the Ministry of Defence is investigating after a Russian frigate, the Admiral Grigorovich, opened fire on a civilian vessel that had approached within 500 meters of its position near the Isle of Wight. A few days earlier, British commandos had, for the first time, seized a Russian oil tanker belonging to the "ghost fleet" targeted by Western sanctions. France has also been conducting this type of operation for several months in order to reduce Russian oil revenues that fuel the Kremlin's war effort. On the ground in Ukraine, the front lines have changed little in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions. But the war continues with unabated intensity through bombings and drone attacks. Kyiv has been experiencing a resurgence of Russian strikes for several weeks. One of these strikes, notably on Monday, damaged the Dormition Cathedral, located within the famous Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For its part, Ukraine is intensifying its deep operations against Russian energy and logistics infrastructure. Refineries, oil depots, and pipelines are regularly targeted using increasingly sophisticated drones. On Tuesday, a major oil refinery in the Moscow region was hit in a large-scale Ukrainian attack. Kyiv presented this operation as a "just" response to Russian strikes against its territory. So, what is the situation on the Ukrainian front? How far are Western powers prepared to increase pressure on Moscow? Can economic sanctions and operations against the "ghost fleet" actually shift the balance of power? Can Donald Trump force Vladimir Putin to negotiate? Finally, what do we know about the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran?
