It's a success that has become a textbook case. On May 19, 1978, legionnaires from the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment were dropped on the city of Kolwezi, in southeastern Zaire (in the former Belgian Congo, which has since become the Democratic Republic of Congo). This operation was decided urgently by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and followed a request for assistance from Zairian President Mobutu. Its objective was to secure the city—in the hands of the Katangese rebels of the FLNC (Marxist-affiliated Congolese National Liberation Front)—and to free the Europeans trapped there.
