Maybe you want to get away from your toxic family or you want to experience personal growth. Moving out of your parents home is a popular topic in the Philippines and in many Asian cultures. Because we have strong family ties, it is common to find people in their 30s and 40s still living with parents. Sometimes you’re already married and your brothers and sisters have children but you all continue to stay in your parents home. As someone who has moved out of his parents home for the past few years, I can definitely say there are rewards to moving out. You learn essential skills such as cleaning, budgeting, managing personal finances, and dealing with relationships. Your 20s are the perfect time to move out as this is the prime time for self development. BUT!!! Before you move out, you need to ask yourself some questions so that you can assess whether or not why you want to move out. First and foremost, Why do you want to move out? What are your motivations? Perhaps you want to get away from your toxic family. Whatever the reason, make sure your heart and mind are in the right place. Second, prepare your finances. Even on a starting salary, it is possible for most people to move out. However, your income and budget will determine where you stay, what food to eat, and the lifestyle you can live. There are many costs to living by yourself such as rent, food, utilities, and groceries. Independent living can be tough, but with the right financial skills, it can be done. Lastly, are you mature enough to move out? Adulting means taking care of yourself. You will also meet new people and handling those relationships can make or break you as an adult.
