Southampton Central Railway Station - Saturday 9th July 2022

A look at Southampton Central railway station on the late afternoon and early evening of Saturday 9th July 2022. Southampton is situated on the former London and South Western main line from London Waterloo to Weymouth and the bulk of services calling here are provided by South West Trains on this route as well as stopping services to Romsey and Salisbury. In addition, Arriva Crosscountry provide services to northern destinations such as Reading, Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly. The station is also served by First Great Western services between Cardiff Central and Portsmouth Harbour and Southern services to London Victoria and Brighton. Towards the end of this video, two charters are seen passing through the station. Firstly, the return working of the 'Dorset Coast Statesman' from Weymouth to Norwich headed by diesel electric locomotives class 47 numbers D1935 and 47614. Then at the very end, steam locomotive SR Merchant Navy 4-6-2 number 35028 'Clan Line' is seen heading the return working of 'The End of Southern Steam' from Weymouth to London Waterloo. This event marked 55 years to the day since the end of steam on the former Southern Region.
