On est là pour vous - S3 - #02 - Exil et fraternité : rencontre avec un éducateur engagé
In this new episode of the podcast "We're Here for You," we hear from Romain Strasser, a specialized educator at the CAES (Reception and Assessment Center) in Nédonchel. This conversation dismantles prejudices about the reception of exiled people and highlights the profoundly human dimension of this profession. Meet someone passionate about community living. The Nédonchel CAES: A Mission of Shelter The Nédonchel CAES welcomes 135 people, primarily exiled families from camps in the Calais region. With a team of about fifteen professionals, the center provides unconditional support 24/7. Its primary mission? To meet basic needs: food, warm shelter, and hygiene. "We offer shelter with everything that entails to help people feel better," explains Romain. The average stay lasts 30 days, during which the team supports each person in assessing their situation and accessing their rights. Debunking Misconceptions Romain is adamant: "Their status doesn't make accessing healthcare any easier. They wait in the emergency room just as long as you or I." The CAES welcomes between 30 and 40 nationalities each year, and contrary to stereotypes, everything runs just as smoothly as anywhere else. "It's the same as in any other facility," the social worker explains. Personal Connections Above All For Romain, the essence of his work lies in "communication." Speaking English, German, and a few words of Farsi and Arabic, he emphasizes the importance of a universal language: "When you're smiling and happy to be there, you always make yourself understood." His unconventional path—studies in art followed by geography—led him to social work after an experience at a summer camp. Since joining La Vie Active in 2016, he has found his calling: "I'm with others, I'm not alone. Life has more meaning when you're with others." Through Romain Strasser's story, the humanity and commitment of La Vie Active shine through. His message is simple yet powerful: "Turn off your TVs, go see for yourself, go talk to people. You'll see that things are different."
