Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that causes infections in both male and female genital areas, leading to the formation of wart-like masses called condylomas. Once HPV enters the body, it settles inside cells and causes periodically recurring infections. Although HPV and related genital warts are classified as sexually transmitted diseases, it is known that, very rarely, they can also be transmitted outside of sexual intercourse. HOW IS HPV TRANSMITTED? The virus is transmitted through skin-mucosal contact between an infected area of the individual and the genital areas of another individual, such as the penis or the female external genitalia, or areas such as the mouth or anus. HPV VIRUS IN MEN The HPV virus is also known to cause penile cancer in men. It is important to remember that men are often carriers and therefore protection is as important as it is for women. Genital warts pose significant risks for male patients as well and should be treated without delay once detected. HOW DOES THE HPV VIRUS MANIFEST? The incubation period varies depending on the HPV type, and after infection, it lasts from 2 months to 6 years, after which warts (genital warts, condyloma lesions) of varying number and size appear in the genital area, anus, and mouth in both women and men. In other words, in some people, warts may appear 2 months after contracting the virus, while in others, the virus may not show any symptoms for years, for example, appearing as genital warts after 5 years. It can be transmitted to the mouth through oral sex, and condyloma genital warts can appear around or inside the anus through anal sex. Condoms do not provide complete protection. Therefore, warts can appear not only on the penis but throughout the entire genital area. These warts can even spread to the abdomen, groin, and anal area. In short, while condoms protect against sexually transmitted diseases, they are not a complete protection against HPV. WHERE CAN HPV CAUSE CANCER IN MEN? HPV, which can lead to penile cancer in men, can also cause cancer in the anal region and the rectum (the final part of the large intestine) when it settles around the anus. In addition, HPV, especially through oral sex, can cause cancer of the nasopharynx, tonsils, tongue, throat, and in some cases, esophageal cancer in men. HOW IS IT TREATED? HPV treatment is absolutely essential in men. The best method for treating condyloma in men is cauterization. Treatment options for condyloma in men include cauterization or laser treatment, depending on the doctor's preference. In addition to cauterization, other treatment options include freezing, surgical removal, and applying special creams for small warts. Among HPV treatment options for men, cauterization is the most permanent method, and recurrences are less frequent.
