The Buddha divides all the contents of our minds into three categories - the delusions, the virtues, and the mechanics (the bits and pieces that enable us to do things). The crucial job is to distinguish between the delusions and the virtues. The key characteristic of the delusions is that they're misconceptions, they're conceptual opinions and they don't have a valid basis. Attachment and anger aren't valid concepts, ignorance is not a valid concept. Attachment, anger, pride, all the unhappy emotions, are the cause of our pain. Every millisecond of what we think and then do and say is the process that creates the universe, and it starts with concepts, thoughts, opinions, viewpoints. We have to work out the valid ones, chuck out the rubbish ones, and get the final right ones, then we're Buddha, it's all laid out, it's a coherent world view, but don't believe it, go and check it yourself!
