India's Southwest Monsoon has lost momentum after an encouraging onset over Kerala on June 4, resulting in a sharp rainfall deficit across the country. According to the India Meteorological Department, India received only 42.6 mm of rainfall between June 4 and June 18 against the normal 72.2 mm, leaving the country with a 41% rainfall deficit. Weather experts attribute the slowdown to a combination of factors, including weak low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, the influence of Western Disturbances, limited support from the Madden-Julian Oscillation, and the emergence of El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean. Historically, El Niño has been linked to weaker monsoon activity and below-normal rainfall in India. Experts caution that while El Niño alone cannot stop the monsoon, it can create conditions that are less favourable for widespread rainfall.
