Kes (1970) - The British Classic That Will Break Your Heart
Take flight with this classic movie review of Kes (1970) brilliantly acted and heart-breaking, it's the story of a working-class English boy spends his free time caring for and training his pet kestrel. Directed by Ken Loach. Based on the 1968 book A Kestrel for a Knave by Billy Hines. Billy Casper (David Bradley), a 15-year-old working-class Yorkshire boy, tames and trains his pet kestrel falcon whom he names Kes. His English teacher Mr. Farthing (Colin Welland) is the only person who encourages him and takes time to visit Billy and Kes. It seems that Billy has finally found a positive purpose to his unhappy existence, until tragedy strikes. . Filmed on location in the North of England around a Sheffield mining town, Ken Loach brings a realism and authenticity that makes Kes one of the best British films in Cinema history. The film was released during a period when the British coal-mining industry was being run down. In October 1969, shortly before the film's release, the Yorkshire coalfield was brought to a standstill by an unofficial strike that forced the government to increase wages. .
