Rajiv Gandhi brought home from Chennai to Yamuna Ghat: Full coverage | Archival footage

A complete coverage of the events on 21st May, 1991 to 24th May, 1991. A deserted aerodrome apart from the security and the signal boy as the jet of the Indian Air force lands in Delhi carrying the remains of former Prime Minister and Congress Chief Rajiv Gandhi as it lands in the National Capital. Out comes Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi and are greeted by an entourage that includes then Prime Minister Chandrashekhar, President R Venkataraman, and other political and military dignitaries. After greeting the President and other dignitaries, a distraught Sonia Gandhi is seen breaking down in Priyanka's embrace. This is followed by Rajiv's body in an open casket as the pallbearers carry his body to the ambulance. Ambulance to Teen Murti, Rajiv Gandhi's official residence back then is filled with a sea of humanity. Men are seen climbing electric poles looking for vantage points for a glimpse of Rajiv Gandhi. Thousands inside the Teen Murti House and even more outside the house as Rajiv Gandhi's body lay in a literal bed of flowers and his poster adorned in garlands. Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan is seen seeing off Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi inside an Ambassador car while he is heard saying he will follow behind in another car. The final moments of Rajiv Gandhi on the banks of the Yamuna as Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are helped by priests and elders to prepare his final moments. Chants from the speakers as Rahul lights the pyre and the body consigned to flames. The ash is collected in multiple urns and the ashes of one of the urns is dispersed in the Yamuna River.
