The Hidden Reason a Weaker Hurricane Can Flood More

A hurricane category measures maximum sustained wind. It does not measure storm surge, rainfall, storm size, or total flood danger. This episode follows the missing mechanism from atmosphere to street. Wind transfers momentum into the ocean. A shallow continental shelf can pile that moving water higher. Storm size, track, speed, bays, rivers, tide, waves, and local elevation decide where the water goes. That is why a lower category can sometimes produce a worse coastal flood. We also show how SLOSH and potential storm surge flooding maps preserve dimensions that a one-to-five wind scale cannot.
