EasyCare Sheep: Genotyping the entire flock

We decided to genotype the entire flock. This will help provide more accurate data for improving the flock going forward. Genotyping has the following benefits: 1.Genetic Improvement: Genomic data allows breeders to identify animals with desirable genetic traits more accurately. By selecting breeding animals based on genomic information, breeders can accelerate the rate of genetic progress and achieve desired breeding goals more efficiently. 2. Parentage verification and Pedigree validation: Genotyping provides an objective method to validate pedigree information. While pedigree records may sometimes be inaccurate due to errors in recording or misidentification of animals, genetic testing offers a reliable means to confirm parentage and ensure the accuracy of pedigree records over time. 3. Accuracy: Genotyping provides more accurate estimates of breeding values compared to traditional methods based solely on pedigree or phenotype. Previously, evaluations were assuming that an animal was getting 50% of its DNA of its mother and 50% from its father, but not knowing which genes the animal had inherited. With genomic information we can look at the genetic makeup of the animal, determine which genes are inherited, and also look at how related this animal is to others. This increased accuracy helps breeders make more informed decisions about which animals to use for breeding, leading to faster genetic progress within the flock, as increases the index accuracy on the replacement and terminal index. 4. Disease Resistance: Genotyping can identify genetic markers associated with disease resistance, allowing breeders to selectively breed animals that are less susceptible to diseases. For example, Scrapie is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) affecting sheep and goats. Certain genotypes are associated with increased susceptibility to scrapie. Genotyping allows the identification of sheep carrying these susceptible genotypes, which can help breeders make informed decisions to manage the risk of scrapie within their flocks. 5.
