Latest from the world of tropics for August 24, 2019 Tropical Storm Bailu is about to strike southern Taiwan with winds near typhoon force, however its rainfall is likely to be its biggest threat with up to 450mm expected to fall in the next 48 hours over the mountains. By the end of the weekend, the storm will move on into China and could later recurve. Tropical Storm Ivo is partially exposed in the Eastern Pacific, and will begin to lose intensity as it moves over colder waters towards the Baja California Peninsula. Tropical Depression Chantal persists in the open Atlantic and is not a threat to land. Invest 98L is located 45 miles east of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and is expected to become a tropical cyclone in the next few days as it begins to move away from the United States. At present, it is forecasted to move further east away from the coast, but model guidance could change yet. Invest 99L is located over the Central Atlantic, and also has a high chance of development as it proceeds towards the Lesser Antilles. This system could produce strong winds and heavy rain for these islands and possibly the Greater Antilles next week. Invest 99W is located near Yap, Micronesia, and could develop into a tropical storm as it heads towards the Philippines next week.
