The Matrix's Lilly Wachowski on Its Lasting Legacy and Why You Won't See the Deleted Scenes
In cinema, few voices have been as influential or as consistently boundary-pushing as Lilly Wachowski’s. Alongside her sister, Lana Wachowski, she helped reshape modern storytelling with The Matrix trilogy, starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss, blending philosophy, cyberpunk, and action in ways that continue to echo through pop culture and tech alike, constantly resurfacing in conversations about technological advancements both in the industry and everyday life. Her later projects — Cloud Atlas, Sense8, and Speed Racer — further explored themes of identity, connection, and transformation, often on a highly ambitious, global scale. Working alongside Wachowski for the second and third films in The Matrix trilogy was Lyndon Barrois, a veteran visual effects artist, animator, and director whose work spans everything from Happy Feet and The Tree of Life to the groundbreaking visual design of The Matrix: Reloaded and Revolutions, where he served as animation supervisor. Known for both his technical fluency and his mentorship of emerging artists, Barrois brings a storyteller’s eye to even the most complex digital sequences, and has earned himself a well-respected name throughout the industry. Before joining the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures for an in-depth conversation about The Matrix trilogy this weekend, the longtime collaborators and friends spoke with Collider's Steve Weintraub to reflect on the circumstances in filmmaking that defined The Matrix era, the evolution of tools, and the promises and pitfalls of emerging AI technologies. Outside the evolution of technology and how it impacts the creative process, the pair also discuss the ongoing challenge of making work that feels personal — even in a blockbuster landscape. #TheMatrix #LillyWachowski #cloudatlas For interviews, movie reviews, and more visit https://collider.com FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL / collider / collider / collider
