What the Ojibwe Remembered About America's Vanished Copper Miners

Long before American mining companies ever reached Lake Superior, the Ojibwe preserved a tradition that had nothing to do with legend. In 1894, researchers recorded elders describing strangers who crossed the great water from the east, worked the region's copper deposits for generations using fire to break the rock, and then loaded the last of it onto their vessels and departed the way they had come. The lake, the elders said, went quiet again. Thirty years earlier, in 1863, a government geologist named Charles Whittlesey had already filed a federal report that made the same region sound just as strange. Surveying the copper country for the Smithsonian, Whittlesey documented thousands of ancient mining pits across Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula and Isle Royale, complete with stone hammers, timber shaft supports, and fire-fractured rock. Radiocarbon dating later placed some of that timber at roughly three thousand years old. Whittlesey estimated that as much as one and a half to two billion pounds of native copper had been removed from the ground over that time. Even the most conservative modern estimates still run into the hundreds of millions of pounds. But the copper artifacts recovered across North America, added together, account for only a small fraction of that. Where did the rest of it go? And is it a coincidence that an oral tradition, carried for a century before it was ever written down, happens to describe the exact method and the exact route that the archaeological record would later confirm on its own?
