December 10, 2010, Oslo, Norway. At the center of the Nobel Peace Prize stage, there was no laureate, only an empty chair. The man who should have been sitting there was serving his sentence in Liaoning, China, 7,000 kilometers away. He had no army, no political party, no weapons, and had not planned any violent actions. The main evidence presented by the court consisted of six articles and a declaration he helped draft, disseminate, and collect signatures for. His name was Liu Xiaobo. In his youth, he was arrogant and acerbic, famously uttering the highly controversial statement that "China should be colonized for three hundred years." In 1989, at the height of his danger, he abandoned his safe life in the United States and voluntarily returned to Beijing, participating in negotiations before the army entered Tiananmen Square and assisting thousands of students in their evacuation. He opposed authoritarianism and criticized the fanaticism of the student movement; he was considered an enemy by the authorities and accused of treason by some overseas opponents. In 2009, he was sentenced to eleven years in prison for his involvement in drafting Charter 08 and publishing articles. In his final statement at trial, he wrote the words that would later resonate worldwide: "I have no enemies, no hatred." In 2010, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize while imprisoned. On July 13, 2017, he died before the end of his sentence. His ashes were scattered at sea, leaving no tombstone. What exactly did he write that caused such tension within a vast state apparatus? Why was someone who advocated nonviolence sentenced to eleven years in prison? Why does that empty chair still unsettle China to this day?
