The Boksburg Suitcase Murder (1995) – What Was Hidden Inside Will Haunt You

In 1995, a quiet suburb in Boksburg, South Africa became the centre of one of the country’s most disturbing murder cases… a crime so brutal it would later be known simply as “The Suitcase Murder." Engel Leendert Bakker, an elderly Dutch missionary in his mid-70s, was living in Boksburg when his life was tragically cut short. What followed was not just murder, but an attempt to conceal a crime in a way that shocked the nation. Bakker was attacked inside a flat by two brothers, Riku and Jano Nortjé. He was beaten with a blunt object and then dismembered. In an effort to hide what they had done, his remains were placed into suitcases… and those suitcases were later thrown from a moving train. The horrifying discovery of what was inside those suitcases would expose the truth and reveal a crime that was both calculated and deeply disturbing. In 1996, the brothers were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder. But the story didn’t end there. Years later, one of the perpetrators would be released on parole after serving just over a decade behind bars, sparking outrage and reopening wounds for many who remembered the brutality of the case. This case remains one of South Africa’s most chilling true crime stories because it forces us to confront not just the violence… but the lengths people will go to in order to hide it. ⚠️ Viewer discretion is advised.
