Akita's early summer delicacy, water shield (Junsai), is in its peak harvest season. In Mitane Town, one of Japan's leading water shield producing areas, the harvest is in full swing. Shidotaen began offering water shield picking experiences on May 20th. They see as many as 40 visitors a day, from both within and outside the prefecture. A woman from Akita City who came to pick water shield said her favorite way to eat it is as tempura. Shidotaen's water shield picking experience is expected to continue until around the Obon festival. Reservations are required.
