Exploration of CALICO GHOST TOWN in Search of Seldom Seen Slim | Yermo, California
Throughout the desert Southwest, an iconic figure of a prospector and mule appears often. Modeled after a man, Seldom Seen Slim, we set out on a multi-episode adventure to seek out information about this freedom-loving and adventure-seeking desert rat. Seldom Seen Slim, born Charles Ferge, was a prospector known throughout the American Southwest. Often seem as the original desert rat, Slim moved from mining town to mining town across Nevada and California. He felt at home in the desert landscapes and enjoyed the quiet and solitude that it offered. This simple man who felt at peace with enough meager belongings to get by in his prospecting activity, ended up in Ballarat later in life and become somewhat of a local celebrity. Despite the name "Seldom Seen", Slim was said to be quite welcoming of company and enjoyed sharing information and history about the area. Slim's lifestyle and carefree attitude made him a bit of an archetype of the prospector of the Old West. His likeness seen throughout the region as an older man with a mule.
