It's Finally Time to Talk About the Sonic Comics
The video people have been asking me to make for so long is here at last! Hope it satisfies. If I'm lucky, this video is gonna start a whole new round of discourse on social media. People will be posting clips of certain things out of context, and then a bunch of people are going to hate me because I shared my opinion. Can't wait! And you might think this video is long. But I cut so much out of it, you have no idea. Talking about things like the annoying song lyrics and game lines in the dialog, the total lack of environmental theming, and the vagueness behind whether or not these comics are supposed to be canon to the games. But there 2 things I'd like to add that missed on my first go around reading Scrapnik Island. First, unlike the main comics shoving the Cyclone in for five seconds just for a reference, Scrapnik Island brings back Mecha Sonic wonderfully. You could have told that story with any random robot. It could have even been Sigma. But the story is enhanced by it being Mecha because in the games that character never returned, even though fans all think he's awesome and have been asking for him to come back. "Why did they never bring back Mecha Sonic?" This takes that and uses it as a springboard for characterization. Mecha was deemed unimportant to the series and abandoned, and that informed his character in the comic. So great. It builds off the character as we know him in the games, rather than replacing him with a different character wearing his skin. Second, Mecha having no faith in the Scrambled Egg Carrier is great because why does he think it will never fly? Because it's a piece of junk, just like him. He's applying his beliefs about himself to everything. Just like a person in a bad mental state does. Very nice subtle stuff. As I said, I used a free trial to read these comics because I did not want to support these trash comics. But I will certainly be buying a trade paperback of Scrapnik Island, and I encourage everyone else to do the same. Speak with your wallet, they say. And I want more of that. Can I get a movement started to get Daniel Barnes more involved in the series? I had lost hope because of the people working on Sonic these days. But now I know that someone who understands Sonic has worked on it officially recently. So there's a chance that we can see Sonic again one day. Start spreading those hashtags, or whatever it is you kids do these days. / pariah695 https://ko-fi.com/pariah695 Intro 0:00 Mega Drive 1:21 Archie Reboot 4:38 IDW 30th Anniversary Special 14:26 Battle for Angel Island 18:00 Tangle & Whisper 46:58 Metal Virus 54:08 Imposter Syndrome 1:17:29 Scrapnik Island 1:27:46 Outro 1:33:39
