Today we're taking you to visit Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. Since we only had a few days in Puerto Natales, we decided to take this day trip to the park. This gave us the opportunity to explore Torres del Paine and stop at some points of interest along the way. We saw all kinds of wildlife, such as foxes, condors, guanacos, and rheas, so if you're short on time, this is a great option. Our first stop of the day was the Milodon Cave, a natural monument located about 30 minutes northwest of Puerto Natales. This site consists of three caves; the largest is 30 meters high and 200 meters deep. This is where the remains of the milodon, a large, now-extinct herbivorous mammal, were found. At the end of the tour, we saw a replica of this prehistoric animal. From there, we started driving towards Torres del Paine National Park, which is 60 kilometers north of Puerto Natales. The best surprise was seeing a group of Andean condors flying along the road. Then we made a pit stop in Villa Cerro Castillo – there are restrooms, food, and they also sell all kinds of handicrafts and artisanal goods. Our first stop inside Torres del Paine National Park was the Paine River Waterfall. Here we got out to take photos and do a short hike. From there, we continued our tour of the park, making several stops at viewpoints along the way, such as Laguna Amarga, Mirador Lago Nordenskjöld, and Lago Pehoé. We also saw ranches, experienced winds like you wouldn't believe, and were amazed by the landscapes at every turn. In the afternoon, we had lunch at the Río Pingo restaurant, which is located inside the park at the southern tip of Lago Grey. Since it was already past 3 p.m., we were able to go in and order our food without any wait. Finally, we hiked the Grey Trail, which leads down to a beach where you can see icebergs. It was an incredible experience! We thoroughly enjoyed this day trip to Torres del Paine. Since we only had a few days in Puerto Natales, we opted for a guided day tour, ideal for those short on time who want to see the best of the park without worrying about logistics. A super practical and highly recommended option! 🦣 First Stop: The Milodon Cave We started the day by visiting the Milodon Cave, a natural monument located 30 minutes from Puerto Natales. Here, amidst the Patagonian cold and damp, we learned about this prehistoric animal, similar to a giant sloth, that lived thousands of years ago. We explored the main cave (30 meters high and 200 meters deep) and saw a replica of the milodon. Entrance fee: 8,000 Chilean pesos (approximately US$10 for foreigners; Chileans pay less). 🏞️ On the Way to Torres del Paine: Viewpoints, Crafts, and Wildlife After the cave, we set off for the park, 60 km north of Puerto Natales. Along the way, we were lucky enough to spot Andean condors flying nearby and made a brief stop at Cerro Castillo, where we bought souvenirs and looked for some warm clothing (it's really cold!). We continued our journey and arrived at the Lago Sarmiento viewpoint, with spectacular views of the Paine massif and incredibly colorful waters. 🌊 Unforgettable Landscapes: Laguna Amarga and Paine River Waterfall The next stop was Laguna Amarga, famous for its mix of fresh and salt water and for hosting flamingos in the summer (although we didn't see any this time of year). Then, we headed to the Paine River Waterfall, where we got off to take photos, walk around, and enjoy the power of the water. The tour through the park included many viewpoints. 🏔️ Lago Pehoé: The Heart of the Park We visited the famous Lago Pehoé, considered the heart of the park for its turquoise waters and breathtaking views of the Cuernos del Paine (Horns of Paine), weather permitting. From here, you can take iconic photos of the park and appreciate all its natural beauty. 🚶‍♂️ Trekking and Free Time on the Grey Trail After lunch, we crossed a suspension bridge and hiked the Grey Trail, getting closer to the lake and the icebergs (a new word for us). We had almost two hours of free time to explore, take photos, and enjoy this part of the park at our own pace.
