Zimbabwe’s Parliament Teaches South Africa What Political Maturity Looks Like

Two countries faced the same temptation. During South Africa’s ZEP consultations, Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma of March and March argued that legal documents should no longer matter because Zimbabweans were collectively unwanted. Days later, a Zimbabwean member of Parliament asked whether South Africans living in Zimbabwe should be expelled in retaliation. But the official responses in both rooms drew an important line. South Africa’s consultation chair stated that valid ZEP holders are legally documented. In Zimbabwe, the parliamentary presiding officer rejected the proposed retaliation, while Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said South Africans whose papers were in order would continue to be welcomed as brothers and sisters. An official census or immigration breakdown supporting that exact number was not presented during the discussion, so this episode treats it as an attributed parliamentary claim rather than a verified population count. The episode does not argue that Zimbabwe is politically perfect or that all South Africans support collective exclusion. The South African consultation chair clearly defended the legal distinction between documented and undocumented migrants.
