Koniec ery Su-22: Po 41 latach samoloty żegnają polskie niebo

On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, after 41 years of service in the Polish Armed Forces, the Su-22 attack aircraft completed their mission in the Polish Air Force. This historic moment was commemorated with a ceremony at the 12th Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Base in Mirosławiec, where soldiers, spotters, and aviation enthusiasts bid farewell to the last aircraft. One of the pilots who made the symbolic flight that day was Brigadier General Pilot Maciej Trelka, former commander of the 1st Tactical Air Wing. "Most of my professional life is connected with this aircraft. I've been with it to Norway, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, and Hungary. I joined NATO with this aircraft. It brings tears to my eyes because it gave me so much joy, even though it wasn't easy," recalled the general, who flew the Su-22 for over 31 years. The commander of the 21st Tactical Air Base in Świdwin, Colonel Roman Stefaniak, emphasized that the Su-22 was a machine that required exceptional skill. "It teaches you humility because it's difficult to fly. There's no computer, so navigation and many other things are the pilot's responsibility. But it's great fun because we get a feel for the aircraft," he said. He also emphasized that saying goodbye to the Su-22 is the beginning of a new phase. "Something ends, something begins. We've been given a great opportunity – we're beneficiaries of the F-35 and FA-50 programs. It's easier for us to say goodbye to the Su-22 knowing that continuity is maintained, the base is growing, and the personnel will have guaranteed jobs," he added. The modern aircraft that will replace the Su-22 are intended to take Polish aviation to a higher level. The FA-50s will primarily serve a training and combat role and will assume some strike duties, while the 5th-generation F-35 fighters will provide Poland with stealth capabilities, modern reconnaissance systems, and air superiority. This will significantly enhance the Polish Air Force's capabilities in terms of national defense and cooperation within NATO. At the conclusion of the ceremony, three Su-22s performed a farewell flyover over the garrisons where they had been stationed in recent years – their silhouettes could be admired over Powidz, Piła, Świdwin, and Mirosławiec, among others. The end of the Su-22's service marks the closing of an important chapter in the history of Polish aviation, but also a symbolic step towards modernization and further modernization of the Air Force.
