2026–27 Federal Budget Migration Update | Provisa
The 2026–27 Federal Budget has confirmed that there will be no change to the overall permanent Migration Program planning level, which remains at 185,000 places. From this allocation, 132,240 places, or over 70 per cent, will be allocated to the Skill stream. This shows that skilled migration will continue to be a key focus for Australia’s migration program. The Budget also confirms that priority will be given to onshore applicants across both the Skill and Family streams. A total of 129,590 places will be allocated to migrants already living in Australia, with an additional 300 places allocated under Special Eligibility. The remaining 55,110 offshore places will mainly be allocated to high-skilled migrants who can help address Australia’s long-term workforce needs. There are also important updates for skilled migrants and trades. The government will provide $85.2 million over four years to improve recognition of migrant skills through faster and more flexible skills assessments. This includes a new modern skills assessment system for Trades Recognition Australia and pilot pathways for priority trades such as electricians and plumbers. The permanent migration points test will also be reformed to better identify applicants who support Australia’s long-term productivity and workforce needs. The focus will be on selecting better educated, higher-skilled and younger migrants overall. The Working Holiday Maker program will also be reformed, including expanded use of ballots to better manage visa numbers and provide fairer allocation. Overall, the Budget shows a continued focus on skilled migration, onshore applicants, stronger skills recognition and better management of Australia’s migration program. If you are currently in Australia or planning your future visa pathway, this is a good time to review your options and understand how these updates may affect your individual situation.
