In this episode of Let’s Disagree, I sit down with Stephen Murphy to talk through the major dictation and translation theories surrounding the Book of Mormon. This episode originally aired on Murph's channel several months ago. We begin by briefly revisiting our last conversation about the witnesses of the gold plates, then move into the way many of us were taught to think about Book of Mormon translation growing up—and how that understanding changes once you start looking more closely at the historical record. Along the way, we discuss Joseph Smith in his 19th-century context, the difference between tight and loose translation models, whether the witnesses really support a tight translation, the role of Isaiah, naturalistic theories of production, and why many believers see the Book of Mormon as too complex to have been produced through ordinary means. We also get into Mosiah priority, narrative complexity, oral dictation, and the broader question at the center of all of this: is the Book of Mormon better explained as an ancient record or as a modern production?
