INHERITING ETERNAL LIFE | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (OCT 13, 2024) Today is the Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time; in the gospel, Jesus is asked by a rich man: “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” The Lord’s reply is simple: “You know the commandments…” And the young man says he has been observing the commandments from his youth. What else should he do, brothers and sisters? Jesus, who at that moment looks with him lovingly, says: “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” The man leaves sad. Can we give what we have—oh, the fruits of our labor—to the poor? Can we give it to them, so we could freely follow Jesus? This is a good point for reflection, brothers and sisters, especially at a time when people work so hard to provide for their daily needs and to secure their future, when success is measured by high productivity, when a good life depends on how much money one has.
