October 26, 2001. A small village near Płock, Poland. There's a party at the home of 25-year-old Krzysztof Olenik. Among the guests are local police officers. The guests leave, leaving Krzysztof alone. That same night, he is kidnapped. He is kept chained to a wall for two years. He is forced to write letters to his parents, mentioning current news so that his family knows he is still alive. In July 2003, the family gives the kidnappers 300,000 euros. Krzysztof is not released. A few weeks later, he is murdered. His body is found only in 2006, when one of the kidnappers reveals the burial site. Ten are convicted. The two main killers receive life sentences. But then the alleged gang leader and two key suspects would die, one after the other, in prison cells. Officially, each time it was a suicide. It would later emerge that experts had found specific police jargon in the kidnappers' letters. And in 2016, a new DNA test would find a trace in the house where the victim was held that did not match any of the convicted men. In 2019, the European Court of Human Rights ruled: The Polish state is guilty of violating the right to life.
