South Africa's slavery history being exhibited at the UN headquarters
An exhibition at U.N. Headquarters in New York examines the history of slavery in South Africa and highlights stories of individuals enslaved at the Slave Lodge in Cape Town at the turn of the 17th century. Titled “Who were the enslaved? Commemorating lives under enslavement at the Cape of Good Hope”, the exhibition was originally shown at the Iziko Slave Lodge in Cape Town in 2023. The exhibit has been on display in the Visitors' Lobby of the U.N. since March 19th as part of the observance of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade and runs until the end of May. Our correspondent Sherwin Bryce-Pease put together a visual collage of the exhibition that includes key messages from speakers at an event to highlight the showcase.
