China’s New Mega Station: 5x the Size of NYC's Grand Central!
Hello everyone! Today I'm visiting Chongqing East Station, a newly built and extremely large railway station in China. With a total area of 1.23 million square meters — five times the size of New York's Grand Central Terminal and seven times that of Tokyo Station — its scale is truly breathtaking. It can accommodate up to 10,000 passengers at once, with 28 passenger platforms, allowing travelers to easily transfer between different rail transit lines within just 5 minutes. The entire construction process took 38 months. The blueprints were extremely complex — engineers said their team spent half a month just studying them. The roof’s steel structure weighs as much as 4,400 tons, and thanks to millimeter-level precision control technology, they successfully completed the massive multi-curved “tree-like” structure. The station’s main hall is very spacious. To enter, you only need to go through security — no ticket is required — and free tea and water are available inside. During hot summer days, many nearby residents come here to escape the heat, especially on weekends when people constantly arrive to take photos and check in for social media. It takes about 40 minutes to reach Chongqing East Station from downtown by subway. Once you exit the subway station, you’ll immediately see the massive tree-shaped columns inside — truly grand and impressive. In particular, this is a great place to watch the sunset in the evening, and many people come here to shoot short videos. The roof uses a special glass curtain wall design that allows natural daylight to enter during the day, projecting patterns onto the floor that resemble rippling waves on a river. This creates a "mountain and water transportation hub" atmosphere, echoing Chongqing’s unique urban identity of "a city among mountains, with water flowing through it." Today, let me take you on a tour of this incredible century project! 00:00 Video preview 00:45 Daytime view around the station 03:44 Shops under construction on the 2nd floor 08:29 Entering the west hall at dusk 11:19 Tourists taking photos during sunset 14:13 Waiting hall on the 2nd floor 18:40 The futuristic-looking interior ceiling 21:13 Inside the waiting area 24:01 Boarding a train traveling at 350 km/h
