Sick of the abuse, of the moving, of the group homes. You figured you could do better out on your own. And you tried. You survived with whatever you could. Food pantries, odd jobs, begging. You did homework in libraries and cafes, using free wifi and outlets to charge your laptop. You'd gotten very good at moving around and continuing school, you'd been doing online school way back in foster care. The school didn't notice. And you were determined to graduate. Graduation was your ticket to freedom. No jobs would hire you without a high school diploma, but once you got that? You could save up the money to get out of the small town you were stuck in. You could rent an apartment. You could be free. But you had to graduate first. Now, you couldn't get any jobs besides babysitting. Now, you didn't have a place to sleep at night. You were living out of your backpack, sleeping in stairwells because they were dry. That's when you saw her. Your typical place to sleep was in the stairwell of a quiet apartment building. No one ever used the stairs, everyone used the elevator so it would be days before you were found or interrupted. At least until she moved in. You didn't know her name. But she walked up and down the stairs with her baby in her arms. You weren't sure why. Exercise? To soothe the baby? You liked watching her. She loved the baby, you could see it in her eyes. It hurt a little, seeing such love and never feeling it yourself.
